Sri Lanka Railway Service.

Sri Lanka Railway Department, branded “Sri Lanka Railways" (SLR), is Sri Lanka’s railway owner and primary operator. It is a key department of the Sri Lankan Government, under the Ministry of Transport, with a history that begins in 1858. Sri Lanka Railways (formerly CGR – Ceylon Government Railway) operates the nation's rail network linking Colombo - the commercial capital of Sri Lanka - and many population centers and tourist destinations. Overview The following map shows the rail network in Sri Lanka. Presently the Sri Lankan Railway network consists of 1,508 Km with 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge. The narrow gauge lines were 2 ft 6 in (762 mm). The railway contains some of the most magnificent scenic rail routes in the world. Particularly the Main Line winding through both natural beauties such as waterfalls, natural forest mountains, misty peaks and precipices, as well as man made festoons such as tea estates, pine forests and engineering feats including bridges and peak level stations.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දුම්රිය ප්‍රවාහන සේවය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ රාජ්‍ය දෙපාර්තමේන්තු අතර වැදගත් ස්ථානයක් ගන්නා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවකි. 1858 දී ආරම්භ කරන ලද එය ප්‍රවාහන අමාත්‍යංශය මගින් පාලනය කරනු ලබයි. ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දුම්රිය සේවය වාණිජ අගනුවර වන කොළඹත් අගනුවරින් ඉතා ඈත පිහිටි ප්‍රදේශත් අතර ප්‍රධාන මාර්ග පහක් ඔස්සේ තම සේවාවන් පවත්වාගෙන යනු ලබයි. බ්‍රිතාන්‍ය ජාතිකයන් විසින් ආරම්භ කරනු ලැබූවත් ශ්‍රී ලංකා දුම්රිය සේවයේ ස්වර්ණතම යුගය ලෙස සලකනුයේ 1955 සිට 1970 දක්වා වූ, ප්‍රධාන යාන්ත්‍රික ඉංජිනේරුවරයකු මෙන්ම හිටපු ප්‍රධාන කළමණාකරුවකු වූ බී.ඩී. රම්පාල මහතාගේ පාලන සමයයි. වර්තමානයේ ශ්‍රී ලංකා දුම්රිය සේවය කිලෝමීටර 1508ක පුළුල්මාර්ගයකින්(අඩි 5 අඟල් 6) සමන්විතය. එමෙන්ම ලෝකයේ ඇති අලංකාරතම දුම්රිය මාර්ගයක් ලෙසද ශ්‍රී ලංකා දුම්රිය සේවය සලකනු ලබයි. විශේෂයෙන්ම ප්‍රධාන දුම්රිය මාර්ගය දියඇලි, ස්වභාවික වනාන්තර සහිත කඳුවැටි, මීදුමෙන් වැසීගත් කඳු මුදුන් ආදී ස්වභාවික අලංකාරයෙන් මෙන්ම මිනිසාගේ අලංකාර නිර්මාණ වන තේ වතු, පයින් වනාන්තර හා පාලම්, උස් ස්ථානවල පිහිටි දුම්රිය සථාන ආදී ඉංජිනේරුවරුන්ගේ විශ්වකර්ම නිර්මාණ ආදියෙන්ද අලංකෘතය.

History of Sri Lanka Railway

Beginnings Early steam powered train on the hill- country Colombo- Badulla railway line the railway network was introduced by the British colonial government in 1864 December 24. The main reason for building a railway system in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) was to transport tea and coffee from the hill country to Colombo. Initially the service began with the Main Line of 54 Km connecting Colombo and Ambepussa. Sir Guilford Lindsey Molesworth became the first chief engineer and later Director General of the government railways. During this time, many Sri Lankans referred to the trains as the Anguru Kaka Wathura Bibi Duwana Yakada Yaka (the coal- eating, water-drinking, sprinting, metal yaks). Extensions were made to the main line in 1867, 1874, 1885, 1894 and 1924, extending its service to Kandy, Nawalapitiya, Nanu Oya , Bandarawela and Badulla.

එවකට ලංකාණ්ඩුවේ දුම්රිය යනුවෙන් හැදින්වුණු දුම්රිය සේවයට රටේ සංවර්ධන හා ඒකාබද්ධ මෙවලමක් වශයෙන් 1850 දශකයේ දී බිහි විය. ශ්‍රී ලංකා දුම්රිය මාර්ගයේ ප්‍රථම පස් පිඩැල්ල කපන ලද්දේ ශ්‍රී මත් හෙන්රි වෝඩ් ආණ්ඩුකාරවරයා විසිනි. ඒ 1858 අගෝස්තුවේ දීය. ප්‍රධාන මාර්ගය කොළඹ සිට අඹේපුස්ස දක්වා නැගෙනහිරට කි.මී. 54ක් දක්වා ඉදිකිරීමෙන් පසු ප්‍රථම දුම්රිය 1864 දෙසැම්බර් 27වැනි දින ධාවනය කළේය. මේ මාර්ගය ගමනාගමනය සඳහා නිල වශයෙන් විවෘත වූයේ 1865 ඔක්තෝබර් 02 වැනිදාය. ස්වකීය ජාල පද්ධතිය වර්ධනය කර ගත් දුම්රිය සේවා 1927 දී කි.මී. 1530කින් යුත් මුළු ධාවන මාර්ගයක් ක්‍රියාත්මක කළේය. ප්‍රධාන මාර්ගය 1867 දී මහනුවර දක්වා ද, 1874 දී නාවලපිටිය දක්වා ද 1885 දී නානු ඔය දක්වා ද 1894 දී බණ්ඩාරවෙල දක්වා ද 1924 දී බදුල්ල දක්වා ද අදියර මගින් ව්‍යාප්ත විය.

S12 Train

Sri Lanka Railways Class S12 is a diesel multiple-unit (DMU) train model, built for Sri Lanka Railways by China's CSR Corporation. The DMUs are currently being imported in phases, with the first batch arriving in Sri Lanka in August 2012. They were built to replace locomotive-hauled passenger trains. Seven of the S12 DMUs were ordered to strengthen long-distance travel on the Main line from Colombo to Badulla. Four of S12s will serve the Kelani Valley Line. The remaining two will be designed as luxury trains.
